Blood pressure is the pressure that is applied to the blood vessel walls when blood is flowing through the blood vessels and most healthy people maintain a constant blood pressure. There are many criteria for hypertension but hypertension generally refers to when the systolic pressure is over 140mmHg and the diastolic pressure is over 90mmHg when measured by a blood pressure meter.
Hypertension is a serious problem since it can cause damage to the major organs, especially the heart, kidneys, eyes and the brain. Hypertension is therefore treated because it can cause arteriosclerosis, which results in the blood vessels being blocked or bursting and causing a cardiovascular disease or a stroke.
The number of people being diagnosed with hypertension is gradually increasing in Korea and this is due to the increase in weight from the overeating and the increase in social stress. Unfortunately, there are no symptoms that appear with hypertension.
Although many people associate back headaches with hypertension, there is no correlation in most cases. Regularly measuring blood pressure is therefore the only way to make an early detection of hypertension. Blood pressure should be checked during any hospital visit or medical examination and remembered.

Most cases of early hypertension show no symptoms and symptoms normally only appear after complications for hypertension occur.

The treatment of hypertension is divided into two methods, the non-medication method and the medication method, and the non-medication method must be combined with the medication method for the rest of the patient셲 life.
The non-medication method, which is referred to as the lifestyle method, includes weight management, limitation of salt intake, exercise, limitation of drinking, not smoking, alleviation of stress and management of cholesterol etc.
Medication must be taken to lower blood pressure when lifestyle methods are not enough to manage blood pressure. There are various types of hypertension medication, such as diuretics, calcium antagonists, vasodilators and angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitors, and such medication must be taken according to the doctor셲 instructions since the prescription varies according to the condition of the patient.
